Fixed Wireless Access (FWA)

  • Mobile-fixed convergence opportunities
  • “Home & away” – on demand home QoE when away from home

One of the leading early 5G “use cases” is fixed wireless access (FWA), whereby a 5G connection replaces the customers’ wired home internet service. While specifics of the business case are dependent on 5G coverage, the spectrum used and area layout, there is great interest in this use case, as it offers high monetization potential.

For example, CSPs could utilize FWA to leverage fixed mobile convergence, as well as enhanced bundling with content and gaming. Furthermore, the technology can potentially be deployed as a dedicated link for specific applications such as WFH and gaming – bypassing “competing” users of the household.

Nomadic use cases also hold high potential, with support for providing connectivity in temporary locations, such as construction sites and mobile event command centers.

Furthermore, a FWA dedicated slice can ensure QoE, even if these links share spectrum with other applications. Careful radio and capacity planning will drive additional revenue from enhanced 5G coverage addressing both mobile and fixed requirements.
